Things You Should Know Before Getting Dental Implants

We know that the sharp tools and buzzing and drilling sounds at the dentist can be extremely intimidating. And the word “implant” makes this procedure seem all the more terrifying, but it’s not!

We’ve compiled a list of things you should know before getting dental implants, so you can feel completely at ease before your procedure.

What are dental implants?

Simply put, a dental implant is a fake tooth root that’s planted into your jaw. They are used as a foundation to add permanent or temporary false teeth or bridges into the mouth. The implants are usually shaped like screws and made out of titanium, as the body reacts well to titanium and does not reject it.

People usually get implants when they’re missing one or more teeth in their mouth and need to get prosthetics. However, they can even be used as a replacement for dentures. Dentures may cause discomfort, gagging and sore gums. In such situations, dental implants are a better alternative.

What is the procedure like?

The first step of the implant process is to take an x-ray of your jaw. This helps the dentist to see if your jaw is strong enough to support implants. After this, the dentist will numb the area they’re going to work on, so you needn’t worry about this being a painful procedure! Then, the dentist will remove the problem tooth from the site of the procedure.

When the site is ready for the implant, using special tools. The implant will be screwed into place in your jaw, and a protective cap will be placed on top. This cap is shaped and molded specifically to fit your mouth, so there will likely be no discomfort involved. The dentist will then stitch up your gum and that’s it!

What should I do after my procedure?

After the procedure, the dentist will place cotton or gauze in your mouth to accelerate the healing process and tell you a window of time during which you cannot eat. After that window, you can remove the gauze or cotton. Make sure to eat only soft foods or liquids for a while, to ensure you do not hurt yourself. It’s best to stay away from foods or drinks that are too hot.

Pro tip: Treat yourself to some ice cream! Not only does it ease the pain, but it also tastes great!
