Is Invisalign for You?

Remember how braces were all the hype in the early 2000s even for kids who didn’t need to get their teeth straightened? That trend has kind of died down, and in its replacement, we have the new teeth straightening treatment called Invisalign.

Invisalign is a dental treatment that involves wearing clear dental trays to align your teeth and straighten them out in a shorter time than traditional braces. But Invisalign isn’t for everyone. Here are some things to consider before getting the treatment.

1.    Do You Need Other Procedures Done First?

Most professional dentists will refuse to give you Invisalign treatment if you have other dental issues that need to be fixed first. For example, if you have missing adult teeth or previously installed veneers, you will most likely be unable to wear Invisalign since it needs a full set of natural teeth to properly work.

The treatment is also not recommended for people who will need to get tooth extractions at some point in the near future.

2.    What Kind of Solution Do You Need?

There is a general misconception that Invisalign can be used to correct the same issues that braces can. Invisalign is not a direct alternative to braces because it works mainly to correct misalignment issues.

If you need to fix the alignment of your teeth i.e., uneven gapping, crowding or over/cross/under bites, then that is a solution that Invisalign treatment can give you.

3. Do You Qualify?

Since the treatment needs a full set of adult teeth to really work, it is most suitable for teenagers and adults. Kids can also get the treatment if all their teeth have come in.

You should also consider the costs associated with the treatment because it can be expensive and you may not qualify financially.

4. Will You Be Able To Commit To It?

Invisalign needs more commitment than regular braces because you can take your Invisalign trays off whenever you want. Unless you’re committed, you might not be able to handle the inconvenience of putting the tray off and back on whenever you need to (like while eating).

You also should not get it if you are a smoker and don’t plan on quitting during the treatment.

If you’ve weighed out all the components of the treatment and are ready to get it, you will need to find a good dentist in your area.
