4 Surprisingly Effective Home Remedies for Toothaches

Suffering from sudden, excruciating tooth pain? Here are some remedies for temporary relief that will tide you over before you get emergency dental services.

Toothaches can be particularly painful and cause a great deal of discomfort. If you’ve ever had a toothache, you know that it can be anything from mildly unpleasant to extremely painful and we all would want nothing better than to get rid of it. The underlying causes of a toothache can range from food getting stuck in a tooth to an injury with a sudden tooth fracture.

While it is best to visit a dentist as soon as possible if you’re experiencing a toothache, here are a few effective home remedies that you can try for temporary relief.

1. Warm salt water rinse

Where toothaches are concerned, the good old warm salt water fix always comes to the rescue.  Dentists recommend mixing half a teaspoon of salt with no more than eight ounces of warm water and thoroughly rinsing your mouth. This will remove any remaining food and debris stuck between the teeth and may help disinfect the tooth.

2. Cold Compress

Using a cold compress may help ease a toothache enough for you to get a good night’s sleep. Simply apply it to the affected area for about twenty minutes and repeat the process every few hours. If you don’t have a cold compress, you can make one at home by freezing water in a water-tight, sealable bag and wrapping it in a clean cloth before applying it to the affected area.

3. Cloves

While cloves have been used for pain-relief for centuries in traditional Chinese and Indian medicine, they may be particularly helpful with toothaches. This remedy is also medically-backed since a 2015 study revealed that eugenol, which is found in cloves, can be effective in reducing dental pain.

4. Garlic

When applied to the affected area, crushed garlic may temporarily heal toothaches and help get rid of bacteria. While garlic for toothaches is not medically-backed, it’s okay to try it in order to see if it works for you.
