Do It Yourself—3 Home Remedies for Toothaches

Cosmetic-Dentistry-Services

There can be many reasons behind a person experiencing a toothache. The most common one is tooth decay, followed closely by infections and periodontal disease.

A toothache indicates an inflammation in the pulp. This pulp comprises nerve endings which are directly linked to the brain and are, therefore, sensitive.

A toothache usually doesn’t go away on its own. The only way to achieve a permanent fix is to see a dentist who can address the underlying cause. Meanwhile, here are a few home remedies which may help you soothe the pain.

1. Cold Compress

One of the most effective remedies against toothaches, cold compresses have been used for decades for most types of pains. When a cold compress is applied, it causes your blood vessels to constrict. This doesn’t just reduce pain, but also lessens any swelling.

All you have to do is take some ice and enclose it in a piece of cloth. Gently press this pack against the cheek, right above the site of the pain. Carry on the practice at regular intervals, every 2–3 hours. Don’t exceed an application time of 20 minutes.

2. Cloves

Cloves and toothaches go back a long way. That’s because they release an oil that contains eugenol. Eugenol is known for its antibacterial and antiseptic properties. In fact, medications which contain eugenol are also commonly used in dentistry.

There are several ways to treat your toothache using a clove. You can either place it directly where the pain is, you can also mix a few drops of clove oil in water and make a mouthwash, or put a few drops of the oil onto a cotton swab and apply it on the affected tooth.

It’s better to use the oil instead of a whole clove, since clove has a very strong and spicy taste which might not taste very pleasant for many.

Garlic

Garlic can work as an excellent remedy for tooth pain if it’s being caused by tooth decay. Garlic has antibacterial properties which prevent plaque formation. Once the plaque is broken down, the pain may also subside.

To do this all you need to do is take a clove of garlic, crush it into a paste and apply it directly on the site of the infection or pain. If you feel like the taste is too strong, you can add a pinch of salt too.

While all of these methods may provide temporary relief, it’s better to see a professional who can get to the root of the issue.
